It has been rather quiet around here. I think the heat is the culprit. All of my livestock, Sam, Jr, Samantha and Samatha Jane are in hiding, But there are some new members around. Last week I saw a pair of Roadrunners. Normally I only see one at a time. I hope they settle in and stay. They are pretty and very tall. The door from the sunroom is a full length glass or from 6 inches off the floor to the top. The first time a roadrunner came up and stuck his head right up to the glass, checking out my living conditions. Kind of like barracks inspection in the USAF. They are not afraid.


My neighbors across the street have 4 yapping mutts, ankle biters that bark all the time. It they think someone in China is going to fart, they bark. The people on the east side of me have 2 dogs. One is a super stupid Schnauzer and the other is part great dane and part pitbull. The Schnauzer barks everytime I open my garage door. So, I bought a high frequency whistle that is used to train dogs. Sadly it does not seem to work. But the Cottontail rabbits do not like it at all.

But getting back to the big dog, he is one of my favorites. Last fall he bit an armadillo in half. My neighbor has a picture of him carrying it up to him. We don’t know if it was a gift or if he was showing off.


Yesterday, I was at an estate sale in Mineola, TX. They had a very nice Dell monitor. The price on it was $20. But Saturday was 50% off so I bought it for $10. It was a great deal. I did not look at it very close until I got it home and plugged it in. Low and behold, it is a Dell All-in-One computer running windows 10. It now runs Linux Mint. My research shows that it is not Windows 11 compatible, which is fine. I don’t like Windows or Mr. Gates.

And I do not approve of the extortion by Microsoft, requiring people to buy a new computer. In fairness, Apple does the same thing. I made my living for many years doing conversions from one Operating System to a different Operating System. So, in some ways I understand why, but I don’t like it. And by using Linux, I don’t have to worry about it. Linux will run on almost any hardware. And if Linux Mint won’t there are other Linux Distros that will. Specifically Linux Lite will run on even very old hardware.

    Now THAT was a deal!! You save a lot of money by not buying Microsoft or Apple!!! I'm a dog person, so they don't bother me unless they bark all night long. Lucky for me, they don't as of now. Love those roadrunners ... I didn't see many of them, even in Arizona.

    Love all your stories about your animals. We have an airhorn that they use on boats that i use for Chloe. I bet if you had one of those you could teach them not to bark. You can get it at Walmart. I need to get a new one also. Later

I have been doing some serious reading, often 2 books a day, but the eyes say stop for a while. My livestock, Samantha, Sam, Bob, Sam Jr. and Samantha Jane have been in hiding. Carol's Dragon Fly Ranch home of Carol's Pond March 7, 2021 Hopefully hibernation season is over. It appears that spring has sprung. There were a lot of daffodils blooming in the side ditch but a hard rain beat about all of the blooms off the stems. But more popped up, including the ones in Carol's yard. Also there are tiny white flowers and some blue and purple ones as well and of course my favorite, dandelions. During that cold snap, Carol's Pond froze over and that is not acceptable at all. Mother Nature are you listening? There were several ducks that stuck around most of the winter, but I have not seen them today. They were very fast swimmers, fast enough to create a good wake behind them. I dubbed them the Shore Patrol. Those of you that were in the military know what the shore patrol is.   February 1, 2022 Carol's Dragon Fly Ranch Home of Carol's Pond The last week of January is my anniversary week. Some of them are enjoyable anniversaries and some suck really bad. That may be gross but it is the only way to say it. But before we get to the description of the anniversaries, there is some other news. Last week I looked in the back yard and there were hundreds of Purple Grackles or common blackbirds. I assume there are working their way north in anticipation of spring. I hope they are right. And there were some ducks that stopped in today. There were only 5 or 6. Something startled them and off they went. I seldom see ducks. Lake Bob Sandlin is on the west side of Mt. Pleasant and I suspect most stop there rather than on a small pond. Also last week, I had an MRI of my head and received some excellent news. The scan did NOT indicate Lewy-Body Dementia.
